5A- Identifying Local Opportunity

Guidelines to living with one kidney

·         This story is of a conversation between someone and Dr. Roach discussing the issues and concerns of having one kidney.  In this story M.K. explains of the concerns associated in having one kidney such as potential signs of metastasis and GFR levels.  Dr. Roach responded by explaining some of the results when removing a kidney.  Dr. Roach also explained that eating more vegetables and less meats could be beneficial to keep the one kidney healthy.

·         The problem in this story is concerning what people with on kidney should do to maintain living a happy and healthy life.  Having a serious surgery such as removing a kidney may be a concern for many people.

·         The people who have this are the one’s who have only one kidney and their family members.  I found this story to be particularly interesting because I only have one kidney as I had one removed when I was only a year old.  This was concerning for my parents because they did whatever they could to make sure I remained healthy.

Police: Driver was doing 80 - Bicyclist killed

·         This story explains that a motorcyclist, Rico Garcon, was traveling 80 mph in a 35-mph zone when he hit and killed a man, Kenneth Johnson, in Lauderhill, Florida.  The crash happened at a little before 11 p.m. Garcon was recently arrested on a charge of vehicular homicide.

·         The problem in this story is speeding and the affects and damages it can have on the lives of people.  The speed regulations are put in place to protect both drivers and bystanders from the dangerous acts with the risks of fast moving vehicles.

·         The people who are affected by this are everyone who drives a car or is in the proximity of a moving car.  This is essentially everyone.  Speed limits help protect people from injuries because as shown by this article a car going 80 mph can be deathly.  If Garcon had gone the speed limit, Johnson would have had seven seconds to get out of the way.

Pay, workload - leading to high - coach turnover - Palm Beach football - Pay disparity - The cost - of a program - Parent problems - Hope on the horizon?

·         In south Florida, the high school football coaching turnover rate is approaching an extremely high rate within the county. Overworked, underpaid, and a feeling of lack of administrative support are some reasons coaches stated that make coaching position undesirable.  Coaches also feel that the schools to not provide the football programs with enough money to succeed and play at the highest level.  The frequent complaints from parents has been cited as another reason high school coaches in south Florida have decided to step down.

·         High school football is major deal in south Florida.  Many coaches have been able to help young athletes advance and succeed at the next level including college and professional football.  Unhappy coaches have led to turnover which in turn can lead to unhappy schools for underperforming teams.

·         First, coaches are upset with the way they are treated which has led to the high turnover.  Second, upset parents and players may be unhappy with the constant turnover of football coaches.  This could negatively affect school football programs which is a major deal in south Florida.

Ignore the Hollywood campaign - to end restaurant tipping

·         Saru Jayaraman, president of the labor group Restaurant Opportunities Center (ROC) United, hopes to eliminate the custom of restaurant tipping.  However, the Restaurant Workers of America, a non-profit advocacy organization has been created to prevent the elimination of tipping.  According to this non-profit group, tipping servers allows restaurants to gain more profits while allowing servers to benefit as well. In turn, removing tipping would hurt lucrative restaurant management, ownership, and server opportunities.

·         The problem is whether tipping should be removed or not.  Jayaraman believes tipping should be removed because she believes it correlates to sexual harassment.  However, the Restaurant Workers of America do not think there is correlation and tipping would hurt restaurant owners.

·         The people who have this problem are servers and restaurant owners.  If tipping were to be removed, restaurant owners would have to pay the serves the amount they would be getting tipped.  This would cause them to lose profits.  This affects servers as well as it could remove from the idea of a reward for exceptional service.

Britain, Ireland investing to boost tourism

·         England, Scotland, and Ireland are making efforts to improve tourism infrastructures by adding new exhibits to well-known sights.  Renovations of museums and historic landmarks will take place in hopes of attracting new tourists.  These renovations and addition of new attractions will be centered around new high-tech sights.

·         The problem with this is these renovations will take years to finish and could affect traffic, congestion, and daily life at these historic sights.  Construction sites would cause traffic, large vehicles, and sometimes prevent people from getting near.  Also, this could make tourists want to go elsewhere until the renovation project is complete.

·         The people affected by this are locals people, businesses, and tourists.  The local people may have to go out of their way to avoid these construction sites.  Local business may lose money because people are not visiting these historic sights because they are under construction.  Tourists may choose to go to different destinations that are not under construction.

4A- Forming An Opportunity Belief

Whenever I go to the beach I leave covered in sand.  From swimming in the ocean, tanning, and building a sand castle the element of sand is always a factor which cannot go away.  I know that the residue of sand after leaving the beach is something that irritates many people and sometimes stops people from going to the beach.  There are showers that wash away some of the sand but for the most part sand is left on one’s skin and can be very irritating.  Creating a type of spray that would repel sand from sticking to the skin could prevent the irritation factor that sand has.  Incorporating this spray concept with sunscreen could create a spray that protects from the UV light of the sun and the irritation of sand.  This could encourage people to use this spray has a multipurpose.

The prototypical customer for this opportunity would be someone who goes to the beach frequently or enough to use a product like this.

I spoke to one of my residents, Tanner Ropp, who often takes day trips to the beach during the summer.  Living in Gainesville, St. Augustine beach is about an hour and a half drive.  Tanner said that the sand factor when going to the beach can be very annoying especially when the day is done and the sand that sticks on one’s skin ends up getting all over the car.  Tanner said that he loves the beach but wishes the sand could be removed.  Tanner also said that as annoying as sand could be it can be dealt with.  Tanner uses showers available at the beach and towels to wipe away as much sand as possible when leaving the beach.  However, Tanner was able to recall an instance in which he went to Blue Springs and the lack of shower availability created a very annoying sand experience.

My discussion with Tanner reassured me that the sand factor when going to the beach can be very annoying.  I agree that using a shower or towel are for the most part can be used in removing sand but there is a need for something that does this when showers are not always available.  I was surprised that Tanner said that sand getting in the car is something he always considers when leaving the beach.  I always considered the sand on the skin most annoying, but I also see that sand getting in the car is also annoying.

One of my friends Andrew said he rarely goes to the beach because of how much he hates the sand.  Andrew said the sand sticks to his skin and does not come out easy.   Andrew also said that he hates when the sand gets on his flip flops and on his towel.  Andrew said that using the showers at the beach does not do a good enough job getting the sand off his body.  Every time he goes to the beach thinking about the best way to come home with as little sand as possible is considered.  However, Andrew noted that he only feels like sand is an issue when he drives to the beach.  The sand that gets in the car can be very irritating to clean.  Andrew feels that living close enough to walk to the beach would make the issue of sand not that big of a deal.

My discussion with Andrew was very interesting. I was surprised that Andrew only sees sand as an issue when he drives to the beach not so much when he walks to the beach.  This exemplifies that Andrew feels hat cleaning the car filled with sand is a hassle and he is not as much bothered by the sand irritating his skin.

I talked to Adam who lives in Sarasota, Florida and is about a five-minute drive to the beach.  Living so close to the beach Adam often went a couple times a month.  Initially, Adam said does not have an issue with sand which kind of perplexed me.  However, diving deeper in the conversation Adam said that the one thing he does not like about sand is that it makes him feel dirty.  No matter how much he tries to get the sand off while leaving he can feel the residue of the sand when putting on his clothes.  Adam said that it is not until after he showers at home that he feels clean and no longer dirty.

I was surprised to learn that the sand did not bother Adam as much as I anticipated.  This may be due to him attending the beach very often or just because it never bothered him.  This shows me that not everyone is as irritated with sand which could make me consider if there is a need to address it.

My conversation with my three friends provided me with different perspectives on the way sand can be irritating.  Tanner and Andrew do not like when sand is left in the car while Adam feels the sand makes him feel dirty.  I feel that I fall in the middle because I do not like when sand is in the car and the dirtiness I feel.  I feel like there is still an opportunity and a need to make the factor of sand less annoying when attending the beach.  My idea of what to do to solve this has changed because everyone has a different reason the sand is annoying.  Additionally, there are some people who are not as bothered by the sand while some people refuse from going to the beach because of the sand.  I think getting feedback on opportunities is a great way to discover if the need exists and if it is a major problem or not.

3A- Your Entrepreneurship Story

I have been a very big sports fan for as long as I can remember.  While attending sporting events I would often try to meet some of my favorite athletes and attempt to get their autographs.  As a kid and throughout the beginning of my teenage years I tried to build up my autograph collection.  However, at the age of fifteen my friend Jason Bolton introduced me to selling some of my autographs.  I consider this the first time in my life I was exposed to entrepreneurship.  In the beginning stages of selling my autographs I was timid to get rid of certain items because I felt a connection to them.  But, as I grew older I saw new potential in obtaining autographs with the hopes of selling them.  Having a way to make a little bit of money and still attending sporting events excited me.  Selling autographs has taught me many things such as managing my money, interacting with possible customers, dealing with crisis management, and many other things related to sustaining a successful business.  I enrolled in ENT3003 to learn if I am truly interested in entrepreneurship.  As a sport management major, I felt like this class could be very beneficial in learning ways to think like an entrepreneur as it is not always easy.  There are a handful number of books one could read about entrepreneurship, but I felt like taking this class could be way more beneficial and worth my time.

1.       There is never any parking in the Jennings parking lot when it gets past 8pm.  I either must circle the lot until a spot opens or park in a parking lot a lot further away.

Coming up with the first ten items on my list was not that difficult.  I was able to think of things in every day life that I felt bugged me.  However, coming up with the last ten items on my list was a little difficult.  Going through the motions of my daily routine I found things here and there that bugged me.  This took some time and I could not do just sit down and write them down which I did for the first ten.
