5A- Identifying Local Opportunity

Guidelines to living with one kidney

·         This story is of a conversation between someone and Dr. Roach discussing the issues and concerns of having one kidney.  In this story M.K. explains of the concerns associated in having one kidney such as potential signs of metastasis and GFR levels.  Dr. Roach responded by explaining some of the results when removing a kidney.  Dr. Roach also explained that eating more vegetables and less meats could be beneficial to keep the one kidney healthy.

·         The problem in this story is concerning what people with on kidney should do to maintain living a happy and healthy life.  Having a serious surgery such as removing a kidney may be a concern for many people.

·         The people who have this are the one’s who have only one kidney and their family members.  I found this story to be particularly interesting because I only have one kidney as I had one removed when I was only a year old.  This was concerning for my parents because they did whatever they could to make sure I remained healthy.

Police: Driver was doing 80 - Bicyclist killed

·         This story explains that a motorcyclist, Rico Garcon, was traveling 80 mph in a 35-mph zone when he hit and killed a man, Kenneth Johnson, in Lauderhill, Florida.  The crash happened at a little before 11 p.m. Garcon was recently arrested on a charge of vehicular homicide.

·         The problem in this story is speeding and the affects and damages it can have on the lives of people.  The speed regulations are put in place to protect both drivers and bystanders from the dangerous acts with the risks of fast moving vehicles.

·         The people who are affected by this are everyone who drives a car or is in the proximity of a moving car.  This is essentially everyone.  Speed limits help protect people from injuries because as shown by this article a car going 80 mph can be deathly.  If Garcon had gone the speed limit, Johnson would have had seven seconds to get out of the way.

Pay, workload - leading to high - coach turnover - Palm Beach football - Pay disparity - The cost - of a program - Parent problems - Hope on the horizon?

·         In south Florida, the high school football coaching turnover rate is approaching an extremely high rate within the county. Overworked, underpaid, and a feeling of lack of administrative support are some reasons coaches stated that make coaching position undesirable.  Coaches also feel that the schools to not provide the football programs with enough money to succeed and play at the highest level.  The frequent complaints from parents has been cited as another reason high school coaches in south Florida have decided to step down.

·         High school football is major deal in south Florida.  Many coaches have been able to help young athletes advance and succeed at the next level including college and professional football.  Unhappy coaches have led to turnover which in turn can lead to unhappy schools for underperforming teams.

·         First, coaches are upset with the way they are treated which has led to the high turnover.  Second, upset parents and players may be unhappy with the constant turnover of football coaches.  This could negatively affect school football programs which is a major deal in south Florida.

Ignore the Hollywood campaign - to end restaurant tipping

·         Saru Jayaraman, president of the labor group Restaurant Opportunities Center (ROC) United, hopes to eliminate the custom of restaurant tipping.  However, the Restaurant Workers of America, a non-profit advocacy organization has been created to prevent the elimination of tipping.  According to this non-profit group, tipping servers allows restaurants to gain more profits while allowing servers to benefit as well. In turn, removing tipping would hurt lucrative restaurant management, ownership, and server opportunities.

·         The problem is whether tipping should be removed or not.  Jayaraman believes tipping should be removed because she believes it correlates to sexual harassment.  However, the Restaurant Workers of America do not think there is correlation and tipping would hurt restaurant owners.

·         The people who have this problem are servers and restaurant owners.  If tipping were to be removed, restaurant owners would have to pay the serves the amount they would be getting tipped.  This would cause them to lose profits.  This affects servers as well as it could remove from the idea of a reward for exceptional service.

Britain, Ireland investing to boost tourism

·         England, Scotland, and Ireland are making efforts to improve tourism infrastructures by adding new exhibits to well-known sights.  Renovations of museums and historic landmarks will take place in hopes of attracting new tourists.  These renovations and addition of new attractions will be centered around new high-tech sights.

·         The problem with this is these renovations will take years to finish and could affect traffic, congestion, and daily life at these historic sights.  Construction sites would cause traffic, large vehicles, and sometimes prevent people from getting near.  Also, this could make tourists want to go elsewhere until the renovation project is complete.

·         The people affected by this are locals people, businesses, and tourists.  The local people may have to go out of their way to avoid these construction sites.  Local business may lose money because people are not visiting these historic sights because they are under construction.  Tourists may choose to go to different destinations that are not under construction.

  1. Hey Max,
As I was reading your local opportunities, one really stood out to me: the death of the bicyclist. This problem really stood out to me because I can relate to it closely. I live off campus so I bike everywhere I go. In an effort to protect myself I have a light that I put on at night, but even with all these precautions, I still see bicyclists get hit by cars. I definitely believe there is an opportunity here at UF dealing with bike safety. Great post!

  2. I had never heard of the campaign to end restaurant tipping before! I think that ending the custom of tipping servers would ultimately lead to a higher expense for customers, anyway. Restaurant owners would have to boost prices to compensate so that they can pay their workers more, which would probably be more expensive than just tipping. I also had not heard of the high school football coach turnover rate in South Florida. This surprises me because of the amount of good football players that come out of South Florida - you would think that they have a great coach and support system. I enjoyed reading your post!

  3. Hey,
While reading through your articles the one about Britain trying to boost its tourism really struck home with me. A lot of my family is from Britain and I visit there sometimes so it is very cool to hear that they are adding things in an effort to get more people to come to the island. The craziest roller coaster ride I have ever been on was in Britain so there is definitely at least one awesome thing to experience along with going out with the family and having a blast at the pubs. Really awesome post.

  4. Hello!
I enjoyed the story you summarized regarding high school coaches. When I played football, our head coach would always complain about administration and lack of funds. Moreover, he states he was coaching for free because the school didn't want to pay him. I agree that high school football is a tremendous part of the culture and I agree that the high turnover rate leads to a decrease in performance and attitude.
